Nate's StoryIn 2010, Nathaniel Hall and his girlfriend Ashley Flores were living in San Jose, California. San Jose is described as the "technology gem" of the Bay Area, Silicon Valley is located there. It is not a racially diverse community.
One evening he and Ashley went out on the town. First at the bar where she worked as a bartender and then to other bars. After a night of drinking, they went home. Both were highly intoxicated and they got into an argument. Ashley is a 300 pound white female and Nate weighed 150 pounds. A domestic violence incident occurred. Ashley initially told police that Nate had purposely bitten her by her eye causing an injury to her eyelid. She said "He bit my eyelid, off and spit it back at me." Nate was charged with aggravated mayhem. After Nate's arrest, Ashley tried to correct her initial statement with law enforcement and the Santa Clara District Attorney. In a sworn and notarized affidavit, Ashley has stated that she was threatened with having to repay the state for medical and relocation costs so she stuck with her initial statement. She was told that if she testified, Nate would receive a reduced sentence. So, she testified against him. Nate had no prior criminal history. Nate was sentenced to 7-Life with the possibility of parole. He has spent 9 years in prison, longer than some murderers. Ashley has since stated that she was choking Nate and he bit her in self-defense. One Love Prison Nation (OLPN) has joined with Nate's parents to try to raise funds in an effort to free Nate from this racial injustice. OLPN will donate 10% of each sale of the Free Nate t-shirt to a defense fund for Nate. Click here to order a Free Nate tee. |
